The Advance Dental Clinic in Chelmsford uses light and glass to create a relaxing environment for patients. Designed by Richard Mitzman.
This striking, purpose-built dental surgery is squeezed onto a narrow site, previously occupied by an undistinguished doctor’s surgery, in a residential suburb of Chelmsford. Commissioned by Dr Andrew Moore and designed by Richard Mitzman, himself a former dentist, the building turns the site's limitations to advantage by the imaginative use of light, drawn in through clerestory windows and skylights.
The building incorporates Mitzman's concerns for hygiene, with the surgeries designed to be kept uncluttered and clean. Patient and staff circulation are clearly separated with the public areas designed to put patients at their ease. Ergonomically designed surgeries enable the dentist to move from one patient to another in a totally clean surgery, thus ensuring the fullest use of his time.
Discussions with Mitzman began in 2001 and the Advance Dental Clinic was completed in May 2003. The clinic with its four surgeries received a regional RIBA Award in 2004.
