Canklow

Rotherham

A design-led approach to delivering high quality homes as part of a neighbourhood regeneration programme, supported by a CABE enabler.

Canklow, a development of 71 new homes by South Yorkshire Housing Association, was one of the first sites to be developed in Rotherham’s housing market renewal (HMR) programme.  It allowed the local authority to explore how a key project can contribute to wider regeneration aims.

Transform South Yorkshire (the local HMR partnership) part-funded the project and, through CABE’s intervention, used it as a pilot to test how enabling support could help deliver high quality outcomes.

Canklow demonstrates that getting timely design advice can add value and that high quality affordable housing is achievable, whatever the location.

How CABE enabling helped

  • discussed how to meet aspirations for a well designed and well integrated housing development
  • ensured that proposals were based on thorough analysis and response to context
  • issued formal reports to feed into the decision-making and design development processes
  • advised on procurement of design consultants
  • maintained close contact with the local authority officers as well as the client team
  • helped ensure that the project would support the local authority's strategic objectives in housing market renewal.
