Hornsea Promenade

In the coastal town of Hornsea, a redevelopment project has enhanced the quality of the public space and facilities along the seafront promenade. Designed by Atkins.

Like its coastal neighbour, improvements and modernisation of its facilities were seen as vital in helping promote Hornsea as a 21st century seaside destination, as well as a vibrant place to live and work. Initiated by East Riding of Yorkshire Council, the project, to rejuvenate the seafront promenade, took forward recommendations made in the Countryside Agency's 'Hornsea Market Town Initiative Action Plan'. Atkins were commissioned in September 2002 to prepare an initial concept masterplan for the whole promenade. Consultation with the local authority, the Hornsea Area Regeneration Partnership, community groups, residents, and key stakeholders identified where available funding should be spent and helped to develop a more detailed brief for the designers.

The key central section of promenade that was subsequently developed has been designed as a series of 'groyne gardens' with enhanced access, shelter, seating, lawn areas, planting, and a children's splash pool. The promenade walkway has been resurfaced and newly created look-out points exploit dramatic views along the coast. An 'activity hub' provides the main focus for the space, utilizing an existing building to create a new café and public toilets. New beach huts are also provided.

The scheme has improved and increased the range and quality of facilities along the promenade. It appears to have proved immensely popular with both visitors and local's, providing opportunities for play and relaxation for all ages. The space was even busy on a bitterly cold February day.
