Jubilee Campus, Nottingham University

Buildings within Nottingham University's Jubilee Campus look out over an artificial lake, with a lakeside promenade serving as the main campus thoroughfare. Designed by Michael Hopkins & Partners.

Increases in student numbers and research workload during the 1990s could not be accommodated on the main parkland campus in the city centre, and a new campus was required. The proposed brownfield site originally housed the main warehouse and distribution area of a Raleigh bicycle factory.

The brief required that the project should meet the needs of around 1,000 students and staff, providing faculty buildings, teaching and ancillary facilities, as well as halls of residence for 150 self-catering post-graduates and 600 full-board undergraduates.

The Jubilee Campus has been praised for its design quality and innovative, environmentally-friendly technology. It has also proved that a requirement for the latter need not increase capital costs, if considered from the project's inception.
