Victoria Square

Birmingham's Victoria Square complements the historic buildings that surround it and fits seamlessly into the adjacent streets. Designed by Birmingham City Council.

The area has been turned into a major civic open space under the Birmingham City Centre Strategy, and is a pivotal part of the plan to break the 'concrete collar'.

The Square is a traditional but exciting public open space, perfectly placed at the junction of several streets within a network of open spaces and squares, and provides an appropriate setting to complement and enhance the listed civic buildings surrounding it.

Public art on a large scale plays a strong role, both visually and also with the sound of falling water from the monumental central water feature. Its steps, weirs and statuary and other works of art are illuminated by 400 m of glowline fibre optic track and 224 fibre optic uplighters, making the square a truly 24 hour space. Not surprisingly it has become a symbol of confidence in Birmingham's future, and has been widely praised by both locals and visitors.
