Cycle and Pedestrian Bridge

Chichester

A pedestrian and cycle bridge to cross the A27 in Chichester. Designed by Balfour Beatty Mott MacDonald.

This scheme is significant for Chichester, both in its own right as a highly visible landmark and as an important structure which gives this roundabout on the A27 a strong identity. We believe that any new construction in Chichester should be of high design quality, building on the legacy of excellent historic and new architecture in this city.

In our opinion, the proposed construction falls short of any design ambition. The design requires refinement; the abutments and the proposed arch appear clumsy and the configuration of the ramps, particularly of the handrails, is unsuccessful.

We suggest that in rethinking the approach to this bridge, an experienced bridge architect is appointed. We support the local authority’s ambition and commitment to developing an ambitious solution which contributes positively to the environment. We are unable to support this proposal in its current form.
