Our annual review for 2005/06 looks at some of the most interesting, influential and inspiring built environment projects that we've advised on.
CABE is now over six years old. The projects we've advised are beginning to take shape on the ground. Our annual review for 2005/06 looks at some of the most interesting, influential and inspiring.
Some projects show vigorous approaches to regeneration: the Lincoln Collection is a landmark building bringing new life to a neglected area. Declining neighbourhoods in a north Sheffield Pathfinder face a better future through tapping into local enthusiasm and energy. Nottingham's city centre is being transformed through a positively continental approach to one public space.
The built environment has a central role in tackling public health issues - we report on a new building in Lewisham, south London, which breaks down the artificial barriers between healthcare and social care.
CABE works. Here's how reviews what we've done to promote better parks - during the year, 120 local authorities have pledged their support to the Parkforce campaign, allocating more on-site staff in significant parks.
The review also looks at what design means for school children - from a school in Northampton which has become a community hub, through to an education programme which shows how housing can be used to help pupils to understand how decisions are made about their surroundings.
But the review does point to inconsistencies in the quality of the built environment. Organisations are still failing to embed the drive for design quality in their culture and procurement systems.
In the annual review, you can chart CABE's progress during 2005/06 - when, what, where and who. Financial statements for the same period accompany the review.
