Europan 9 winners celebrate
An ambitious scheme seeking to attract people back into Stoke-on-Trent and a child-friendly scheme in Milton Keynes are the winning housing designs in the Europan 9 competition for young architects. The winners, selected from 61 teams across Europe, submitted housing designs for three sites across England, providing a total of up to 500 new homes.

Competitions really work
The Europan winners feature in a new CABE exhibition at New London Architecture in London showing what design competitions can achieve. Competitions are one of the best ways to procure well-designed buildings and places. The exhibition, free to enter, runs until 14 February.
Architecture centres boost
Twenty-one architecture and the built environment centres around England are to receive a total of £1.8 million in CABE funding over the next two years to deliver projects that encourage communities to get involved in changes to their built environment. The work of the architecture centres is geared to their regions and reflects local issues.
Building for Life awards call
CABE and the Home Builders Federation are calling for entries for the 2008 Building for Life awards. The awards recognise schemes that demonstrate best practice in housing and neighbourhood design. If you know of a great new scheme that you think deserves recognition, let us know by the end of March .
Arise, Sir John
John Sorrell, who has chaired CABE since 2004, has been knighted in the new year’s honours list. Sir John receives the honour for services to the creative industries.
Chairing design reviews
We’ve produced a short film featuring Paul Finch, who chaired design review for eight years, explaining in his inimitable way how to chair design review meetings.

Design review comments
CABE’s design review panel believes that this London City-fringe mixed-use scheme fails to relate to the grain or character of south Shoreditch in terms of use and scale – so we don’t think the proposal should gain planning permission as it is currently proposed.
We have applauded the design team’s sensitive design for this mixed-use development of residential and commercial, along with a hotel, on the Thames near Hampton Court Palace.

We are unconvinced by plans in Northampton for up to 3,500 homes with a new local centre including schools and other facilities. We recommend a comprehensive rethink of the masterplan design to take account of the local topography, landscape, spaces and housing typologies.
We have doubts about proposals to expand this historically and architecturally significant village in Dover with up to 1,210 new homes. We favour a solution that responds more successfully to the existing building stock and the beautiful landscape setting.
