CABE (the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment) welcomes the decision by the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government (CLG) to grant planning permission to the redevelopment of London's 20 Fenchurch Street. The decision follows the publication of the planning inspector's report recommending that planning permission is granted.
CABE notes that the Inspector found that 'the quality of the design would make a significant contribution to London's architecture' and that the sky garden and pocket park offer significant public benefits.
CABE also notes the Inspector's conclusion that the redevelopment of 20 Fenchurch Street would not cause any significant harm to the setting of the Tower of London World Heritage Site or to views from the Tower.
Richard Simmons, Chief executive at CABE, said:
'We welcome the decision to grant approval for the redevelopment of 20 Fenchurch Street. One of the great strengths of the City's architectural experience comes from the excitement of dramatic contrasts and changes in scale. This decision recognises that London retains an appetite for bold, contemporary architecture in its historic heart. I hope that appetite will encourage more clients to work with world-class architects in the city.'
