The North West has a strong industrial and built environment heritage as home to both Liverpool and Manchester.

Despite an economy larger than some countries, there is a stark contrast between the fortunes of neighbouring areas.

We fund the following architecture centres:

  • Places Matter!
    Aims to raise the quality of place-making in the region, providing support and celebrating success.

We also fund the Architecture Centre Network, a development and advocacy organisation for the architecture centres.

Design and Heritage Pennine Lancashire

Design and Heritage Pennine Lancashire (DHPL) champions high quality design during the process of housing market renewal, to ensure that the area’s local heritage and distinctiveness is respected.

The pilot programme provided design advice and skills training to help the local housing pathfinder (Elevate), local authorities and developer teams commission a spatial strategy and urban characterisation for the area.

A historic environment advisor also supported built heritage, characterisation and construction skills training projects.

Design Liverpool

Design Liverpool is a collaborative pilot programme in partnership with Liverpool City Council, Liverpool Vision, RENEW Northwest and The Northwest Regional Development Agency.

It aims to place design excellence and the creation of high quality environments at the forefront of Liverpool’s regeneration. Design Liverpool’s priorities include:

  • promoting high quality residential neighbourhoods through the Housing Market Renewal Initiative
  • supporting the process of design review
  • advocating design excellence
  • increasing capacity through a learning and skills programme.
