Abode

Abode is a residential masterplan designed to reconcile the domestic scale with the ecological demands of a changing climate. Rather than a monolithic housing block, the plan proposes a porous village structure that negotiates the tension between private retreat and public porosity. The siting takes advantage of the existing topography, orienting the primary building masses toward the prevailing sun while preserving the soft edges of the peripheral woodland. The layout is governed by a legible hierarchy: a central shared village square that radiates outward into progressively quieter zones, grounding the development in a legible social geography.

Morphology and Grain

The morphology of Abode is deliberately heterogeneous. The grain of the streetscape is defined by varied setbacks and building heights that mimic a long-evolved vernacular settlement rather than a contemporary subdivision. The plan rejects the orthogonal grid in favor of a meandering street pattern that slows pedestrian movement and creates pockets of enclosure. This winding geometry allows for the insertion of a diverse housing typology—from the compact duplex to the detached family home—without compromising the cohesive visual character of the site. Each building is positioned to minimize shadowing on the public realm while maximizing its own southern exposure.

Materiality and Vernacular

The material palette is a direct response to the regional vernacular, updated for contemporary performance. Brickwork is a primary medium, used in a range of textures and bonds to provide a sense of permanence and geological weight. These heavy masonry forms are contrasted with timber cladding and zinc accents, which offer a lighter, more contemporary expressive layer. The design avoids the sterility of a uniform finish by allowing for a nuanced palette of muted earthy tones—ochres, deep reds, and muted greys—that echo the surrounding landscape. The roofs are predominantly pitched with a high degree not only to shed water but to create a rhythmic silhouette that speaks to the area’s agricultural heritage.

The Public Realm

The public realm is the connective tissue of the masterplan. The central village square functions as an anchor for community life, designed with durable paving and seating that encourages lingering. From this core, a network of shared walkways and mews connects the homes, with the width of the streets narrowing as one moves toward the private gardens to signal the transition from public to domestic space. Permeable fencing and hedging are used instead of hard boundaries where possible, allowing the view from the public realm to filter through the development and maintaining a sense of visual openness.

Ecology and Performance

Ecological resilience is woven into the plan at every level. The layout preserves the existing tree canopy and integrates new woodland strips that act as wildlife corridors and biodiversity anchors. Permeable paving across the shared areas manages surface water on-site, while the building forms are designed to be high-performance envelopes that minimize thermal loss and carbon debt. The orientation of the buildings is a fundamental ecological driver, ensuring that solar gain is used passively to reduce heating loads in the winter. By embedding these ecological requirements into the urban form rather than treating them as an overlay, Abode achieves a domestic environment that is both rooted in place and responsive to a low-carbon future.
