Chisenhale Primary

Chisenhale Primary occupies a sensitive urban residential context, requiring a design that balances active learning with a safe, quiet environment. The planning strategy organizes the site into distinct zones—reception, play, and assembly—while maintaining visual permeability to the neighborhood and a clear pedestrian hierarchy.

Site Context and Constraints

The site sits within a dense residential fabric, which imposes several key constraints:

  • Neighboring Boundaries: Proximity to homes means noise and overlooking must be managed through careful setbacks and screening.
  • Pedestrian Safety: High vehicle traffic on the main road necessitates a secure, supervised drop-off and pickup regime with a clear pedestrian buffer.
  • Site Geometry: Irregular plot shapes limit building footprint, favoring a decentralized layout that weaves the school through the available space.

Design Principles

The master plan rests on three core principles:

  • Safety and Supervision: Every zone is designed for clear lines of sight so staff can monitor children across the site.
  • Visual Permeability: Instead of a closed fortress, the site uses low walls and transparent fencing so the school remains an open, welcoming part of the community.
  • Learning Landscapes: The site is not a series of classrooms; it is a continuous environment where play, assembly, and learning overlap.

Site Organization

The site is divided into three functional zones:

Reception and Arrival

The entrance acts as a transition zone, a secure lobby for parents and visitors, and the primary point of supervision. It connects the street to the internal site without compromising security.

Play and Learning Zones

These areas are distributed across the site, with soft play, structured play equipment, and open lawns. The layout creates a safe, pedestrian-only core where children can move freely under supervision.

Assembly and Outdoor Learning

A large, open assembly area provides a flexible space for morning meetings, outdoor lessons, and community events. It is positioned away from the busiest pedestrian paths to minimize disruption.
