Evergreen Adventure Playground
The Evergreen Adventure Playground is designed as a nature-integrated play space that moves away from standardized, static equipment in favor of unstructured, open-ended exploration. The site embraces the principles of Loose Parts Play (LPP)—the idea that children develop greater agency, imagination, and problem-solving skills when they can manipulate, build, and reconfigure materials rather than simply inhabit a fixed structure. Evergreen is not a plastic maze; it is a woodland setting where the landscape itself is the primary play resource.
Loose Parts Play as the Engine of Play
At the center of the design is the Loose Parts depot. Instead of a single slide or swing set, children are given access to logs, ropes, stones, buckets, and planks. These elements are the "loose parts" that can be arranged into forts, bridges, vehicles, or abstract sculptures. This approach recognizes that children are natural engineers and narrators; when given a pile of wood and some rope, their play becomes self-directed and collaborative rather than dictated by the layout of the equipment.
Scaffolded Risk and the Risk-Benefit Analysis
Evergreen applies a risk-benefit analysis rather than a risk-avoidance model. The goal is to provide "scaffolded risk"—opportunities for physical challenge that are designed to build competence rather than cause injury. Climbing on a fallen tree or balancing on a log develops spatial awareness, strength, and a sense of achievement. The design manages these risks through the selection of materials (soft forest floor, durable hardwoods) and the zoning of the site, ensuring that wilder play is situated in areas where it can be safely observed and supervised.
Zoning and Site Organization
The playground is divided into four distinct zones to accommodate different modes of engagement:
The Active Zone
This area features larger-scale natural structures for physical exertion. It includes climbing boulders, a balance trail on fallen trunks, and rope networks suspended between trees. The terrain is uneven and varied, encouraging children to navigate complex topography and test their physical limits in a controlled environment.
The Forest Floor
This is the least structured zone, intended for wild exploration and imaginative play. It is a densely wooded area where the vegetation is kept natural. Children can hide, build forts, and explore the ecology of the site. The "equipment" here is the forest itself — the hollow logs, the leaf litter, and the winding paths.
The Creative Zone
The depot for loose parts is located here, on a clear gravel pad that serves as a workshop. This is where construction and sculpture happen. Children can drag materials from the depot and assemble them, with the gravel providing a hard, stable surface for building while still feeling integrated with the natural surroundings.
The Gathering and Rest Zone
A quieter area equipped with seating and a sheltered picnic table. This serves as a transition space where children can wind down, parents can rest, and groups can gather for stories or snacks. It is positioned with a clear view of the active and forest zones, allowing for relaxed supervision.
Materiality and Ecological Integration
Every element is chosen for its tactile quality and durability. Timber is charred or treated with natural oils; stone and gravel provide texture; rope and hemp offer grip. There are no bright plastics or metal slides that would clash with the woodland setting. The playground is an ecological integration — the play equipment does not sit on top of nature; the playground is nature. The paths follow the existing contours of the land, and the planting is kept native to support local wildlife and a rich sensory palette for the children.
Operation and Maintenance
The site is designed for low-maintenance operation. The loose parts depot is organized for easy replenishment, and the natural materials weather into the landscape rather than degrading. The playground is intended for supervised use, with clear boundaries and a depot system that allows for a rotation of materials, keeping the creative zone fresh and engaging for repeat visits.
