Ingress Park

Ingress Park is conceived as a large urban park that balances ecological restoration with public amenity. The master plan centers on a significant lake, which serves as both a visual anchor and a functional wetland fringe. This water body is complemented by diverse woodland and meadow zones, creating a varied landscape that supports local birdlife and invertebrate populations while offering a range of activities for visitors.

Site Context and Connectivity

The park is situated at the interface of the dense city and the open landscape. The design responds to this transition with a clear pedestrian and cyclist circulation network that draws people from the urban fabric into the green space. The main entry is a paved plaza that acts as a node, mediating between the street and the more informal park interior. A continuous perimeter loop provides an accessible route for exercise and leisure, while radial paths fan out from the lake to the different wooded and meadow areas.

Master Plan Components

The park is organized into several key zones:

  • The Lake and Wetland Fringe: This is the park's ecological and aesthetic core. The shoreline is designed as a graded wetland margin rather than a hard edge, which helps to filter runoff and create a rich habitat for waterbirds and amphibians. A paved promenade runs along the north side, providing views over the water and a space for seating and gathering.

  • Woodland and Meadow Zones: To the east and south, the park opens into a mixture of dense woodland and open meadows. The woodland provides a sheltered, shady retreat and a corridor for wildlife, while the meadows are a versatile space for informal play, picnicking, and large-scale events. A children’s play area is nestled at the edge of the woodland, benefiting from the trees for shade and a naturalistic setting.

  • The Promenade and Paved Plaza: The main entry plaza is a hardscaped area designed for high traffic and social interaction. It hosts the park's visitor center and a cafe, and the open space can be used for markets or festivals. From the plaza, a series of wide, paved paths lead into the park, clearly delineating the transition from the city.

Circulation

Circulation is designed around the lake as the primary destination. The radial paths from the plaza fan out across the site, allowing visitors to choose their route into the woodland or meadow zones. The perimeter loop ties the different areas together, providing a coherent and accessible route for all users. The paving on the main paths and the plaza is durable and accessible, while the paths through the woodland and meadow zones are a more permeable surface that blends into the landscape.

Planting and Ecology

The planting scheme uses native species to support biodiversity and provide seasonal interest. The woodland zone features a mix of oak, birch, and hazel, with an understorey of hawthorn and wild rose. The meadows are seeded with a diverse mix of grasses and wildflowers, which is cut infrequently to allow the flora to flourish. The wetland fringe is planted with reeds, sedges, and water lilies, creating a rich habitat for aquatic life and birds.
