Joseph Menswear Boutique

The Joseph Menswear Boutique is a retail intervention that repurposes a traditional street-front shell into a zoned, experiential shopping environment. The program is split into three distinct zones: the public showroom, the semi-private fitting area, and the private logistics rear. Each zone has its own circulation pattern and material palette to clearly signal user types and activities.

Programmatic Zoning

The ground floor is the public showroom. It uses a neutral palette of oak and steel to let the clothing stand out. The display is organized along the front window, with a central island for featured items. Circulation is open and undirected in the showroom so customers can browse at their own pace.

The upstairs is the fitting zone. It’s a semi-private space where the experience changes from browsing to trying on clothes. The walls are softer, with textured wallpaper and a longer counter. The circulation here is more focused — customers enter from the showroom and move toward the mirrors.

The rear of the ground floor is the private logistics zone. It’s a warehouse and staff room with shelving and a packing station. This zone is completely separate from the public areas, with a rear entrance for deliveries and staff.

Circulation and Access

Circulation is zoned by user type. The front door is for the public and leads into the showroom. The fitting rooms are upstairs, with a staircase that signals the move from public to semi-private. The rear entrance is for staff and deliveries, completely away from the public areas.

The showroom has a wide, open circulation pattern so customers can browse freely. The fitting zone has a more focused pattern, with a central counter and mirrors. The logistics zone has its own circulation for stock handling and staff movements.

Materiality and Experience

The showroom uses oak and steel to create a clean, modern feel. The display is organized along the front window, with a central island for featured items. The fitting rooms have a softer palette with textured wallpaper and a longer counter. The logistics zone is a functional space with metal shelving and a packing station.

The lighting also changes with the zones. The showroom has bright, even lighting for the display. The fitting rooms have warmer, softer lighting with accent lights around the mirrors. The logistics zone has functional LED lighting for stock handling.

The overall experience is a clear transition from public to private. The showroom is about browsing and discovery, the fitting rooms are about the personal experience of trying on clothes, and the logistics zone is the functional engine that supports it all.
