Maid Marian Way is a proposed urban renewal project that reimagines an underutilized thoroughfare as a vibrant pedestrianized civic promenade and wooded walk. The project seeks to bridge the divide between the residential neighborhoods to the west and the commercial district to the east, replacing a car-centric corridor with a safe, accessible, and ecologically rich public realm. By prioritizing pedestrians and cyclists over vehicular traffic, the promenade becomes a shared civic space where the community can gather, walk, and commerce in a human-scaled environment.

Pedestrianization and Connectivity

The fundamental shift in the project is the removal of through traffic, which transforms the roadway into a walkable boulevard. A unified paving scheme unifies the residential and commercial edges, while a clear pedestrian hierarchy guides movement toward the civic plaza and the wooded walk. The promenade is designed with a 4-meter clear pedestrian zone, flanked by a 2-meter planting strip on each side, which also serves as a buffer between the walking path and the parking lanes at the promenade’s ends.

Key connectivity features include:

  • A new pedestrian gateway at the western residential edge, with a seating terrace and bicycle parking.
  • A wide, accessible paved path that is wheelchair and stroller friendly.
  • Clear signage and wayfinding that links the promenade to the commercial district.
  • A traffic-calmed transition zone at the eastern end of the promenade.

The Wooded Walk

The wooded walk is a shaded pedestrian path that runs through a densely planted woodland on the western side of the promenade. The woodland is planted with a mix of deciduous trees, shrubs, and perennial groundcovers, creating a lush, ecological corridor that provides shade and a sense of enclosure for walkers. The path is designed with a permeable gravel surface, which reduces runoff and adds a natural texture to the walk.

The wooded walk’s design includes:
