The North West quadrant of Manchester presents a classic urban planning challenge: a legacy of heavy industrialisation and impermeable surfaces that must be retrofitted for a climate-uncertain future. The response is not a patchwork of isolated parks, but a coherent green infrastructure — a legible, continuous blue-green network that weaves nature and water into the everyday experience of the city. This is about a systemic intervention at the permeability level, rather than a series of disconnected aesthetic improvements.
The Blue and Green Network
The backbone of this strategy is a networked matrix that links existing ecological assets — parks, canals, and roadside verges — into a single functional system. Fragmentation is the enemy of biodiversity; a isolated patch of grass cannot sustain meaningful wildlife populations. By creating a legible green spine that runs through the North West, we provide a corridor for species movement and ecological migration.
