Situated at the water’s edge, Quay Bar is envisioned as a relaxed social hub that balances a sophisticated bar experience with a welcoming, accessible public face. The concept is rooted in the promenade’s pedestrian-heavy environment—a place where the city meets the water and where leisure should feel unhurried. The design moves away from the enclosed, dark bar trope and instead embraces openness, using the waterfront as the primary spatial anchor.
Design Approach
The architecture is defined by transparency and a natural palette. The building is a slender volume with floor-to-ceiling glazing along the water, minimizing the barrier between the interior and the promenade. Inside, materiality is grounded in wood, stone, and weathered metal, materials that reflect the quay’s texture while providing warmth. The bar counter is the expressive heart of the plan—a long, linear element that both serves the operation and provides a social boundary.
The lighting is layered: warm recessed spots over the bar, soft pendants over the lounge seating, and a wash of indirect light that avoids glare on the water. The terrace extends the interior program into the summer months, with a continuous paving plane that ties the building to the quay’s public realm.
Planning and Context
Quay Bar sits within a mixed-use urban regeneration zone, and its planning is dictated by the pedestrian flow of the promenade. The scheme prioritizes a pedestrian-first circulation model, with the main entrance oriented toward the walkway rather than the car park. The slender footprint preserves views for neighbors while maximizing the water frontage.
