Stoke Newington West Reservoir Centre
The Stoke Newington West Reservoir Centre is a civic intervention that breathes new life into a decommissioned industrial asset. Formerly a critical node in London's water distribution network, the reservoir basin has spent decades in a state of arrested decay. This masterplan seeks to transform that idle infrastructure into a vibrant community hub, blending public leisure, ecological restoration, and cultural production.
Masterplan Overview
The design is anchored by the reservoir basin, preserved as the site’s defining monumental form. Rather than burying the past, the masterplan celebrates the basin's scale and hydrology, integrating it into a pedestrian-led public realm. The plan organizes the site into three legible zones:
- The Reservoir Garden: the water basin itself, reclaimed as a public park with floating boardwalks and planting.
- The Pavilion: a lightweight community and gallery building on the northern edge.
- The Wetland Buffer: a transitional ecological zone that screens the site from the street and manages runoff.
The circulation is entirely car-free, prioritizing a leisurely stroll along the "Wetlands Walk" — a promenade that winds between native grasses and the water's edge.
Architecture and Program
The Pavilion is the program anchor, designed as a pavilion on piles to minimize disturbance to the reservoir's delicate ground conditions. Its structure is timber, a carbon-conscious choice that contrasts with the heavy masonry of the surrounding waterworks. The building is organized around a central glazed atrium that allows daylight to penetrate the deep floor plate and provides a visual link to the basin outdoors.
The program is intentionally broad, designed to serve diverse community needs:
- Community Room: a flexible, high-ceilinged space for meetings, workshops, and neighborhood assemblies.
- Gallery and Studio: exhibition spaces and workrooms for local artists and craftspeople.
- Café and Kitchen: an anchor for social interaction and a revenue stream for the centre.
- The Basin Garden: a public amenity for quiet reflection and informal gatherings.
The Pavilion's glazed facades foster transparency, making the interior activities visible to passersby and inviting the public into the building's life.
Urban Context and Ecological Strategy
The site is a significant piece of the Stoke Newington urban fabric, and the masterplan acknowledges its dual identity as a public asset and a sensitive ecological niche. The wetland buffer zone acts as a soft edge, replacing the hard boundaries of the industrial era with a diverse mix of sedge, rush, and wildflower meadows. This zone also functions as a sustainable drainage system (SuDS), filtering runoff before it enters the basin.
By preserving the basin's scale while inserting a human-scaled pavilion, the design creates a civic anchor that feels both monumental and intimate. The centre does not overwrite the site's history; it repurposes the reservoir's enduring civic utility for the 21st century.
