Villa Street Medical Centre
The Villa Street Medical Centre is proposed as a regional healthcare hub that balances public-facing primary care with private diagnostic and ancillary services. The project addresses a growing demand for consolidated medical facilities, offering a single destination for consultation, testing, and specialist treatment. The architectural response is a legible three-wing layout anchored by a central atrium — a clear wayfinding device that organises the programme into distinct functional zones while providing a welcoming, human-scale entrance.
Planning Rationale
The site was selected for its accessibility and suitability for a mixed-use medical programme. Situated near a major arterial road with secondary access from residential streets, it is easily reachable by car and public transport. The planning rationale is built on four pillars:
- Land Use: The centre consolidates multiple medical functions onto one site, reducing the need for patients to travel between separate facilities.
- Access and Circulation: Separate entries are planned for ambulances, staff, and patients, with a dedicated drop-off zone to keep the main frontage clear.
- Parking: The site includes an on-site car park with an adequate number of spaces, including disabled parking and electric vehicle charging.
- Signage and Wayfinding: The central atrium serves as a clear public entry and a navigation hub, with legible signage and a colour-coded zonal layout.
Architectural Response
The plan is organised into three wings radiating from the atrium, each with a specific function:
The Diagnostic Wing
This wing houses the imaging and laboratory spaces. It is set further back and has a more enclosed, controlled exterior, reflecting the need for privacy and a quiet environment for patients and staff. The layout is a series of modular rooms around a central corridor, with a dedicated area for sample collection and a waiting zone that is physically separated from the primary care wing.
The GP and Primary Care Wing
The most public wing, it houses the GP consultation rooms, a nurse station, and a children’s clinic. The rooms are arranged in a linear fashion with a consistent layout, and the nursing station is centrally located to oversee the whole wing. The waiting area is spacious and brightly lit, with plenty of seating and a clean, calming aesthetic.
The Ancillary Wing
This wing contains the administrative offices, a staff room, and a small retail unit selling healthcare products. It is situated at the opposite side of the site from the diagnostic wing and has a more open, pedestrian-friendly façade.
The Central Atrium
The atrium is the heart of the project. It is a double-height space with a glazed façade that lets in plenty of natural light. It serves as the main public entrance and a wayfinding hub, with a reception desk and clear signage that directs patients to the three wings. The atrium also provides a social space with some seating and a small café area.
Operational Considerations
The design is underpinned by several operational requirements:
- Patient Zoning: The three wings are zoned by function and privacy level, with the diagnostic wing being the most private and the primary care wing the most public.
- Ambulance Access: A dedicated ambulance bay is located at the rear of the site with a clear, unobstructed route from the main road.
- Wayfinding: The atrium and a colour-coded zonal layout make it easy for patients to find their way around the centre.
- Signage: Clear signage is used throughout the building, with a consistent typeface and colour palette that reflects the centre’s brand.
The Villa Street Medical Centre is a well-considered and legible healthcare facility that meets the needs of the community while providing a high-quality environment for patients and staff.
