Whitefield Schools And Centre

Whitefield Schools And Centre is conceived as a comprehensive educational and community hub, blending formal academic environments with vocational training and public services. The design acknowledges the dual role of the site: a place for structured learning and a social infrastructure for the surrounding community. By integrating these functions into a single campus, the project achieves economies of scale in shared facilities and creates a vibrant, multi-layered destination that serves students and residents alike throughout the day.

The Academic Zone

The academic zone is the primary driver of the building’s program, housing classrooms, laboratories, and dedicated study areas. The spatial logic here is defined by acoustic zoning. The classrooms are clustered in a relatively quiet wing, while the laboratories require specialized ventilation and durable surfaces. The study areas are placed in a more secluded corner to provide a focused environment, separated from the high-traffic circulation of the main hall and the community centre.

Lighting is a key architectural element in the academic wing. Classrooms are oriented to maximize indirect southern light, while labs and study areas utilize high-ceiling heights and clerestory windows to ensure uniform illumination without glare. The plan uses a clear hierarchical circulation route that guides students directly to their zones, minimizing transit through public areas and reducing noise transfer between the academic and vocational zones.

Shared Facilities

The library and assembly hall form the social heart of the building. The library is designed as a quiet, resource-rich environment with a mix of individual carrels and collaborative seating. The assembly hall is the large-volume public space, capable of hosting school assemblies, vocational workshops, and community events. To manage the acoustic and thermal differences between these two spaces, the hall is acoustically isolated from the academic wing with a double-skin partition and a dedicated ventilation system, ensuring that loud events do not disrupt nearby classrooms.

Vocational and Community Centre

The vocational and community centre extends the building’s mission into the wider neighborhood. It includes a skill centre for vocational training, recreation rooms, and public-facing community services. The vocational spaces are zoned together, with shared workshop facilities that can be utilized by both students and the public during off-hours. The community centre component is accessed via a separate public entrance, creating a distinct flow that allows community members to use the recreation rooms and services without entering the formal school zones.

Planning Principles

The master plan for Whitefield Schools And Centre is guided by four planning principles:

  • Universal Accessibility: The entire site is designed to a barrier-free standard, with a unified grade level across the main campus and tactile wayfinding for everyone.
  • Orientation and Daylight: The primary classroom blocks are oriented on an east-west axis to capture the best daylight, with deep eaves to mitigate summer heat gain.
  • Circulation Separation: Academic, vocational, and public flows are kept distinct through a three-zone circulation model: the academic spine, the public lobby, and the community precinct.
  • Acoustic Zoning: The noisy community and vocational zones are situated at the north end of the site, while the quiet academic zone occupies the south.
