Kings Reach
Kings Reach is a fortified stronghold defined by its defensive topography and its relationship to the urban fabric of the settlement that grew around it. The site is an elevated plateau on the eastern edge of the plain, a natural defensive position that dictates the orientation of the fortifications. The planning of the site is a study in concentric layers of security and function: the natural edge, the curtain wall, the inner bailey, and the keep at the center.
Site and Context
The site is defined by its commanding view of the plain to the west. This orientation is the primary driver for the placement of the main gatehouse and the heaviest concentration of towers. The plateau has steep slopes on three sides, which the curtain walls extend to create a continuous defensive perimeter. The urban fabric of Kings Reach is a classic castlefield settlement, where the town is organized in relation to the fortress. The commercial core lies in the southeast, while the residential and craft areas extend toward the southwest, with the supply lanes providing the connective tissue between the gates and the hinterland.
Perimeter Defenses
The defenses are organized as a continuous curtain wall that follows the topography of the plateau. The wall is punctuated by a series of towers, each with a clear line of sight to the next to provide interlocking fields of fire. The main gatehouse is the primary threshold of the site, a heavily defended structure that controls all access and serves as the administrative center of the fortress. The barbican at the gatehouse is the outermost defensive layer, designed to funnel attackers into a killing zone. The towers are positioned at the vulnerable corners and at regular intervals along the curtain wall to provide flanking fire along the faces of the wall.
Internal Organization
Inside the walls, the site is divided into three distinct zones: the keep, the bailey, and the outer ward.
- The keep is the innermost citadel, a massive block that serves as the final refuge and the residence of the commander. It is separated from the bailey by a secondary wall and a gatehouse.
- The bailey is the functional heart of the fortress, containing the stables, the forge, the armory, and the barracks. It is organized around a central courtyard that allows for the efficient movement of people and supplies.
- The outer ward is the zone for auxiliary activities, including the smithy, the granaries, and the smaller workshops. It is the buffer between the bailey and the town.
The Settlement
The settlement that surrounds Kings Reach is an extension of the fortress’s urban planning. The town fabric is a dense network of narrow streets and small courtyards, with the commercial core at the southeast corner of the site. The markets are located just outside the main gatehouse, creating a natural nexus for trade and supply. The residential and craft areas extend toward the southwest, with the supply lanes providing the connective tissue between the gates and the hinterland. The whole of the settlement is organized in relation to the fortress — the castle provides the security and the administrative center, while the town provides the economic and social life that makes the fortress viable.
